The sounds of little feet running down the hall reached me just as I shut the front door.
I was hot and tired, and I smelled after working more than 24 hours. The shift was a long one made longer by an apartment fire. Those are always the worst. So many residents are unaccounted for and it just makes the job that much more stressful. I couldn't help but picture Ember trapped in the building a little over five years ago.
